The die-hard acting enthusiast wrote a play based on “The Golden Girls” that she recently brought to the stage at the Gainesville, Florida, senior living community. The entire theater performance was created entirely by seniors and residents of the community.
“When I moved here a year and a half ago, we didn’t have a group quite like this that would perform on stage,” said Carrico. “It’s so exciting to see so many of my neighbors getting involved in such a fun acting group.”
You may have heard Patricia’s name around town. She’s been acting for more than 45 years and was one of the founders of the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre. Shortly after moving into the community, the Young at Heart Drama Club was born.
For four months, ten residents involved in the group prepared for their curtain call on The Golden Girls and the Murder Mystery Weekend. Patricia wrote, directed and acted as Blanche in the theater performance that truly captivated this entire active aging community.
“Oh, working with all these wonderful people – Pat is so good, and she’s taught us a lot,” resident Shompa Mazumder told WCJB-TV reporter Kristin Chase. “Everyone has been very cooperative and friendly.”
From the actors to props to costumes and lighting – residents ranging in age from 55 to 90 years young worked to make the idea a reality. This is truly an all-inclusive performance where any resident is welcome to get involved.
“We’ve taken people who have gone their whole lives never being on a stage and given them a part,” said Patricia. “It doesn’t matter if they have vision or mobility issues; everyone is welcome here. This has really given us something to look forward to. It’s so inspiring.”
The community hosted two presentations in May 2023. The Young at Heart Theatre Group has plans to continue creating and finding new plays to bring to the residents of the community.
